We run all the time with lights and no siren...sometimes the situation just calls for it. If they patient asks for a code two approach, then we turn off the siren...If we're running at night and there is no traffic, then we won't run the siren...why wake people up in their houses for no reason? We'll still turn on the yelp at intersections and whatnot...otherwise no...

KS law is exactly like NY. It is all or nothing. If a patients family requests a silent approach we have to shut down early and respond normal traffic. I know that Nebraska is different they are allowed to run lights only. But not here in KS

the only problem,,,,, is the older members who dont like the siren,,,,,,,, it gives them a headace .......... well i say too bad,,,, they have to do it,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

because of a car hits us,,,,, and we only have our lights on we can get sued,,,,,,,, if we have our lights and siren on then it is the other persons fault...........my favorite saying is....

IF IM UP, EVERYONES UP

Our law is you have to be seen as well as heard, but we never follow it :) We only run sirens at intersections or when we are in town. No point in driving for 20 miles in the boonies with a siren on and no cars around.

I couldn't tell you what the NY state law says, all I know is what we do. The driver has the switch for the lights, and the boss (who sits next to the driver) has the siren button, actually it is a foot pedal, that he hits with his toe, he also has a horn button down there. On the drivers side is just the horn button. So siren use is up to the boss. Usually they only use it when needed.

on our driver's side there's a siren pedal.... but the siren is left up to the "boss"

Our dept trys to enforce proper use of sirens... When the truck leaves the ramp for a priority 1 the electric siren must be going. Not just the federal (liability if you hit someone pulling off the ramp). As for while in route, electric siren is supposed to be left on(state law says so) unless its a Priority 2 call. Driver has the switch for the emergency lights of course and he has use of the air horn on both the steering wheel and the floor. The officer controls the sirens... Federal and air horn have foot pedal on floor... Electric siren and radio mounted between driver and officer so they both can reach it.

At night depending on the call we will take it easy on the sirens, but as long as its a priority 1 response we will be going lights AND sirens regardless of time. Not because we want to wake everyone up... but because we need to follow protocol.
